Mechanics: Mechanical Energy

Image
Mechanics:  Mechanical Energy As we all know from our earlier lessons that physics is the study of matter in relation to energy. Under mechanics, we will be dealing with the study of mechanical. Under other branches like thermal physics, we will be studying thermal energy and the same goes for other branches whereby we will be dealing with concept of  electrical energy, light energy, energy possessed by electromagnetic waves, nuclear energy etc. We will study mechanical energy under three heading; ■Relationship between work, mechanical energy and mechanical power. ■Potential energy stored in elastic materials. ■Minimization of mechanical energy for doing useful work. Relationship between work, mechanical energy and mechanical power . Work : Work is said to be done when a force moves a body through a particular distance in the direction of the force. When work is done, energy is expended. So, no work can be done without energy. For example, conside...

Digestive System

Image
Digestive System Animals depend solely on the food synthesized by plants since they cannot manufacture their own food. This food substances obtained directly or indirectly from plants need to be broken down into simple and diffusible form for use by animals by a complex system.  These systems are called digestive system.  Digestive system  includes the alimentary canal and organs which aids the process of digestion. Digestion is the breakdown of large insoluble food molecules into small water-soluble food molecules so that they can be absorbed into the watery blood plasma. There are of two types of digestive tracts namely Incomplete and Complete tracts. Incomplete digestive tract has only one opening (mouth) to the outside world which serves for ingestion and egestion. Coelenterates(Hydra) and Flatworms(Planaria) are examples of organisms with this tracts. Complete tract...

Cell and its environments

Image
Cell and its environment  The cells of organisms are surrounded by a watery medium or environment. Materials flow into the cell from its environment by any of the five(5) procecess. 1. Diffusion 2. Osmosis 3. Active transport 4. Endocytosis 5. Exocytosis Diffusion and Osmosis are referred to as 'passive transport' as they do not require energy for materials to be transported between the cell and its environment.  Diffusion can take place in any of the three states of matter( solid, liqui and gas). However,it is very fast in gases , quite slow in liquids and extremely slow in solids.    Above are  diagrams that explain the process of diffusion It is noticed that the particles are initially concentrated at the top corner of the glass. If the particles randomly move around (diffuse) in the water, they eventually become evenly/uniformly distributed randomly from an area ...

PHYSICS: MECHANICS: DYNAMICS

Image
PHYSICS: MECHANICS: DYNAMICS Dynamics is the study of motion and it causes. Motion is the change in position of a body with respect to time and its surrounding. The agent that change or tend to change the position of a body is known as Force. This implies that force causes motion. The study of the effect of this force on different systems is known as dynamics. In this article, we are going to study dynamics under the following headings; ■ Newton’s laws of motion and linear momentum ■Systems of unbalanced forces ■Systems of balanced forces ■Kinds of forces To understand the relationship between force and the motion of a body, we will need to look into Newton’s laws of motion and the concept of linear momentum.   Newton’s laws of motion and linear momentum Newton’s 1st law: This is also known as the law of inertia. Inertia is the ability of a body to remain at rest or in a uniform motion.  This law states th...

Lit-in-English: How to ace an 'A'

How to Ace an ‘A’ In Literature in WASSCE I hear those thoughts that run through your mind every time you pick your literature textbook. "Aargh, why so many poems" ? "Why is this written in such language"? "This just isn’t sinking"… The list of the negatives you feed your mind with, goes on and on, but right now, flush them away for YOU will ace your distinction in this supposedly complicated subject. Tell yourself that you are going to ace a distinction: Yeah, seems too basic. Basically, everyone wishes to have it. But, don’t see this seemingly ‘basic’ tip as unnecessary. Psychology has proven that things you tell yourself and say with conviction get more realistic because the brain will often send signals for you to do more in those areas. If you tell yourself you will pass, gradually, your brain starts functioning as an alarm clock to remind you to just read. Also, when the reading starts getting boring and your brain is sh...
